2023 IRS electronic filing change

Business Owners:

For the tax year 2023, The IRS implemented a major change in the rules for electronic filing of information returns.  CGN CPA PLLC wanted to make you aware of this change and what steps you need to make now to ensure your compliance with these new rules.  The IRS now requires employers/businesses to electronically file the following forms if they have an aggregate of 10 or more of:

  • W-2
  • 1099 series
  • 1098 series
  • W-2G
  • 1042-S
  • 1094
  • 1095 series
  • 3921
  • 3922
  • 8027

This requirement applies to filings for tax year 2023 and beyond (forms that are filed starting in 2024).  Earlier regulations applied the 250-return threshold separately to each type of information return.  The IRS has the authority to penalize any employer/business who does not file electronically if they meet the threshold.

Now is the time to evaluate your needs for filing your 2023 tax forms as an employer/business.  Should you need our assistance in filing these forms electronically you need to contact our office no later than September 15, 2023.  We will need time to evaluate and schedule what additional work we may have.  If you have any questions about this, please contact our office.
